Our last day in Paris began with a visit to the Louvre Museum. We entered under the museum's courtyard through what was once the moat of a medieval castle. A local tour guide escorted us through the museum pointing out the highlights and helping us understand who these artists were while giving us an appreciation of the art they created.
Karen & Steve's 14-Day Tour
Europe Through The Back Door
- 2008 -
We entered the Louvre from under the courtyard where we had a unique view looking through the underside of the glass pyramid.
If you've seen the "Da Vinci Code", you'll recognize this inverted pyramid. We're ready to hit the road and it's off to Burgandy.
Venus de Milo, created at some time between 130 and 100 BC
It's almost impossible not to get a stiff neck in the Louvre. The ceilings are breathtaking.
Karen admiring the King's crown jewels.
This incredibly beautiful painting is "The Wedding At Cana" painted in 1553. Until today, we had no idea that these famous paintings were so massive in scale.
Winged Victory, one of the Louvre's greatest treasures 220-190 BC
Daphnis and Chloe by Gerard
Napoleon’s Coronation. Napoleon hired Jacques-Louis David to commemorate the coronation ceremony that he threw for himself at Notre Dame. There is so much more to the story which is told within the painting.
It's funny how until you're exposed to things and made aware of the story behind them, you have little or no appreciation for the beauty right there in front of you. This tour opened our eyes to beautiful creations that we would otherwise have never seen.
